Micro-plastics – Change What You Consume!
Did you know?
According to a study commissioned by Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and carried out by the University of Newcastle, an average person could be ingesting as many as 100,000 plastic particles a year. This translates to us consuming about 250 grams of plastic or the equivalent of eating a credit card in one year!
Here’s how.
Microplastics are exceedingly small pieces of plastic that pollute the environment. And are derived from the breaking down of larger plastic debris, both at sea and on land.
Fossil based plastics degrade slowly, often over hundreds if not thousands of years. Over time, a culmination of physical, biological, and photodegradation caused by exposure to sunlight and oxygen, reduces the structural integrity of plastic debris to a size that is eventually undetectable to the naked eye. This process of breaking down large plastic material into much smaller pieces is known as fragmentation, allowing these microplastics to be ingested by marine life and incorporated into the bodies and tissues of many organisms. Ultimately these microplastics are ingested by humans when we consume fish with microplastics in them.
Plastics supplier in Malaysia – Impact Rank’s Plant-based Biodegradable plastic film (NuPlastiQ®) allows biodegradation to take place without fragmentation. During a trial conducted using our Plant-based Biodegradable film, the lab test was stopped prematurely when it showed 32.4% biodegradation after just 132 days. The film showed no sign of fragmentation as it was still intact and under the microscope, instead of broken pieces of plastic, craters were seen forming on the film caused by bacteria “eating away” at the film.
As a plant-based biodegradable plastics supplier in Malaysia, Impact Rank‘s biodegradable films offer a stable shelf life, retains normal plastic functionality, gains significant strength even with reduced thickness, and, most importantly, is more beneficial to the environment.
